Is it really necessary to change the timing belts in Hondas?

I have a %26quot;97 Crv with 100,000 miles that has never had the belt replaced. I hear from a few people that I should think about getting my timing belt and water pump replaced.|||honda%26#039;s have what they call %26quot; interference engines%26quot;. what this means is that when the timing belt breaks, that valve to piston damage will occur. replace your timing belt and stay within all your regular maintinance guidelines. the replacement of your engine or repir to your cylinder head can cost in the thousands of dollars. best advise, take care of your car|||get it replaced or rely on luck.

manufacturers suggest this for a reason.|||its a recommend that its done... for one reason.. if and when it breaks it can cause more damage.... but really never done it before... never seen a need to fix something thats not broken...... you have pas the point of time by double about and its a 97 its near its end now so why worry about it just drive it.. and no dont replace the water pump unless its leaking no need in spending money when you dont have too.. just drive it|||Yes, they break. The result is you or your family is 40 miles from home and car is dead.

In some engines the valves contact the pistons when it happens, destroying the engine.

Get it replaced.|||no matter honda or not.a timing belts are very important! so are the water pump.being female i always concentrate keeping on keeping up with the fluids.if your belt breaks, plan on a new engine.|||yes change it since it%26#039;s very close to its life end and you don%26#039;t want to get stranded . but some of the newer models have the 100K intervals on these things and some have timing chain which requires no change ever.|||You need to get that sucker changed. If your timing belt snaps, your valves will hit the the pistons and good-bye engine. You have an interference engine in the CR-V, don%26#039;t risk your timing belt over it. Get a timing belt job done, make sure it includes timing belt tensioner and water pump as well. It was supposed to be done @ 60,000 i believe is what Honda recommends. You%26#039;ve gone 40k miles over that, your lucky it didn%26#039;t snap already. Get it changed ASAP because if it snaps you%26#039;ll be upset when your engine is ruined and you have to spend a couple thousand instead of preventing it for a coupe hundred. There%26#039;s a couple guys in my Honda club who regret not doing the timing belt, they went on without a timing belt job and it snapped, ruined the engine in both of their cars. I believe they both spent just about $1,500 to repair everything, and that was with them doing about half the labor.
